Redrawing Black History
For the past two months, I’ve been working on pieces inspired by the prompts in the Make Art That Sells (MATS) course, Redrawing Black History with Lilla Rogers and Tamisha Anthony.
The purpose of the course was to “give you a deeper understanding of the richness and beauty of Black American history.” I was really excited to dive in and was delighted to learn about these amazing artists (I only knew about Betty Davis and Edmonia Lewis but learned so much about the other icons).
Betty Davis: Funk, Punk, Rock icon.
Alice Coltrane: Jazz Harpist
Marian Anderson: Opera Singer and Civil Rights Activist
Edmonia Lewis: Sculptor of Black and Indigenous Figures
Lorraine O’Grady: Conceptual Artist
Gwendolyn Bennett: Poet, Painter, Harlem Rennesance Icon
Elizabeth Catlett: Sculptor
Betye Saar: Assemblage Artist
Part of what draws me to illustration is the research aspect. I love diving into the history of a subject, not only for the benefit of the piece I’m working on, but to expand my knowledge of history. It’s an all encompassing experience and I come out the other end better for it.
